Before surgery
Consultation & planning
Your journey begins with a thorough consultation in which our team will review your medical and dental history and perform a complete oral examination. We'll take 3D scans and digital X-rays of your jaw to measure your existing bone height, evaluate your sinus anatomy, and confirm whether a Sinus Lift is the right preparatory step for your Dental Implant treatment. From there, we'll develop a personalized treatment plan and walk you through every step of the process.
Pre-operative instructions may include:
- Fasting: Do not eat or drink anything for at least 6–8 hours before surgery if receiving IV Sedation or General Anesthesia.
- Medications: If instructed, take approved medications with a small sip of water. Avoid blood-thinning medications unless otherwise directed.
- Transportation: A responsible adult must accompany you and drive you home if you are receiving IV Sedation or General Anesthesia.
- Decongestants: If you have sinus congestion leading up to your procedure, let us know — we may recommend an oral decongestant in advance.
During surgery
The procedure
A Sinus Lift (also called Sinus Augmentation) is typically performed under Local Anesthesia with IV Sedation and takes approximately 90 minutes to two hours. During the procedure:
- A small incision is made in the gum tissue to expose the upper jawbone.
- A small window is created in the bone to gently access the sinus membrane.
- The membrane is carefully elevated — or 'lifted' — to create space beneath it.
- Bone graft material is placed in the newly created space to build up bone height.
- The gum tissue is sutured closed, and healing begins.
In some cases, an osteotome (minimally invasive) technique may be used, which allows graft placement without a full incision. Your surgeon will determine the best approach based on your anatomy and imaging.
After surgery
Sinus precautions — important
Following sinus precautions after your procedure is critical to protecting the graft and preventing complications:
- Do not blow your nose for at least 4 weeks after surgery. If you need to clear your nose, wipe gently.
- If you must sneeze, keep your mouth open — do not pinch your nose closed.
- Avoid straws, smoking, and any activity that creates suction or pressure in the nasal or oral cavity.
- Avoid air travel for at least 2 weeks after surgery, as cabin pressure can disrupt healing.
- Avoid heavy lifting, strenuous exercise, or bending over for at least 2 weeks.
- Sleep with your head elevated on 2–3 pillows for at least 10 days.
Managing discomfort & swelling
- Mild to moderate discomfort, swelling, and minor bloody nasal discharge are normal for the first few days.
- Apply cold compresses to the face in 20-minute intervals for the first 36 hours to help reduce swelling.
- Take prescribed pain medication and antibiotics as directed.
- A small amount of bloody nasal discharge on the side of the surgery is normal for the first week.
Diet & oral hygiene
- Eat soft foods for several days and avoid anything hard, crunchy, or chewy.
- Stay hydrated, but do not use a straw.
- Gently brush your teeth the following morning. Avoid vigorous rinsing for several days.
- Use the prescribed antiseptic rinse twice daily for 2 weeks as directed.
Healing timeline
The bone graft will integrate with your existing jawbone over the next 4–9 months. Once healing is confirmed through follow-up imaging, Dental Implants can be placed into the newly formed bone.
