Bone Morphogenetic Protein, or BMP, is a naturally occurring protein in the body that plays a key role in signaling bone-forming cells to get to work. In oral surgery, a laboratory-produced form of this protein is applied to a surgical site to stimulate the body's own regenerative process, encouraging new bone to grow where it is needed. BMP is most commonly used in conjunction with Bone Grafting and Dental Implant procedures, offering a biologic alternative or complement to traditional grafting materials. The result is bone that grows naturally at the site, without requiring bone to be harvested from elsewhere in the body.
BMP may be recommended when a patient needs significant bone regeneration but has limited donor bone available, when prior grafting attempts have not been fully successful, or when your surgeon determines that a biologic approach will produce better outcomes for your specific anatomy and goals. It is also used in complex cases involving significant bone loss, preparation for Dental Implants, and certain reconstructive procedures. Our surgeons will evaluate your imaging, health history, and treatment goals to determine whether BMP is appropriate for your care plan and explain clearly why they are recommending it.
Before surgery
Consultation & evaluation
Bone Morphogenetic Protein (BMP) is an advanced regenerative technique that may be incorporated into your treatment plan when bone grafting or jaw reconstruction is needed. During your consultation, our surgeon will review your medical and dental history, take 3D imaging or X-rays to assess your bone volume and density, and determine whether BMP is appropriate for your case.
BMP is commonly recommended in preparation for Dental Implants, during jaw reconstruction, in Sinus Lift procedures, and at the time of tooth extraction to preserve the ridge. Pre-operative instructions are the same as for other bone grafting procedures:

How BMP works
Bone Morphogenetic Proteins are naturally occurring growth factors found in the human body. When applied during surgery, BMP stimulates the body's own stem cells to differentiate into bone-forming cells, generating new bone without requiring a second surgical harvest site.
The most commonly used form in oral and maxillofacial surgery is rhBMP-2 (recombinant human BMP-2), sold under the brand name INFUSE Bone Graft, which is FDA-approved for specific oral surgery applications.
During the procedure:
In some cases, BMP is used in combination with traditional bone graft material to enhance and accelerate the regeneration process.
After surgery
Recovery & healing
Recovery after a BMP procedure closely mirrors standard bone grafting recovery. You can expect:
New bone begins forming within weeks and continues to develop over several months. The timeline for placing Dental Implants into BMP-generated bone is typically 4–6 months, depending on the extent of regeneration needed.
When to contact us
If you have been told you need significant bone regeneration or are preparing for Dental Implants, BMP may be an option worth discussing. Contact us to schedule a consultation at any of our three Denver Metro locations.
Advanced Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery is here to address all your questions and concerns regarding Bone Morphogenetic Protein: smarter bone regeneration.
Traditional Bone Grafting uses donor bone material — from your own body, a bone bank, or a synthetic source — to fill in areas of bone loss. BMP is a naturally occurring protein that stimulates your body to grow its own new bone. When applied at a surgical site, BMP jump-starts the bone healing process, often eliminating the need to harvest bone from another part of your body and reducing the complexity of the procedure.
In many cases, BMP can replace the need to harvest your own bone (an autograft) from the jaw, chin, or hip — avoiding a second surgical site and simplifying recovery. In some complex cases, BMP may be used in combination with graft material. Your surgeon will determine the best approach for your situation.
New bone begins forming within weeks of placement, and the process continues for several months. Dental Implants can typically be placed into BMP-regenerated bone approximately 4–6 months after the procedure, depending on the extent of bone needed and how well healing progresses.
Yes. rhBMP-2 has been extensively studied and is FDA-approved for specific spinal, tibial, and oral surgery applications. Clinical studies consistently confirm its safety and effectiveness. Your surgeon will review your full medical history to determine whether BMP is appropriate for you.
BMP eliminates the need for a secondary harvest site, which reduces surgical risk, shortens procedure time, and decreases post-operative pain and recovery. It also provides a consistent, predictable supply of bone-stimulating material without the limitations of donor availability.
Coverage varies depending on your plan and the specific indication for BMP use. Our team will help you review your benefits and provide a clear cost estimate before treatment begins. Financing options may also be available.
